WiFi costs are one of the most confusing aspects of running a holiday park or caravan site. Quotes vary enormously, the terminology is inconsistent, and it's hard to know whether you're being quoted a fair price without industry benchmarks to compare against.
This guide cuts through that confusion. We'll give you real price ranges for different scenarios, explain what drives costs up or down, and walk through the three main commercial models including the one where installation costs the park nothing.
1. What drives caravan park WiFi costs?
The price range for holiday park WiFi is genuinely wide, anything from £350 for a self-install starter kit up to significant investments for large, complex sites. Understanding what drives this variation helps you calibrate expectations for your own site.
Site size and pitch count
More pitches means more access points, more cabling and more installation time. This is the single biggest cost driver. A rough rule of thumb for direct-to-van coverage: one access point per 8–15 pitches depending on terrain and unit density.
Coverage specification
Communal-only coverage requires far fewer access points than full pitch-level coverage. A communal-only system might need 3–5 APs; full-site coverage for the same park might need 30–50.
Physical environment
Trees, buildings, hills and terrain variation all increase the AP count required. A flat, open field is cheaper to cover than a wooded hillside site. Mature oak trees in particular are notorious for absorbing signal.
Existing infrastructure
If the site has existing cable ducting or a wired backbone, the cost of running cables is dramatically lower. Starting from scratch on a site with no existing infrastructure adds cost for civils, cable runs and conduit.
Equipment specification
Enterprise-grade equipment (Ubiquiti, Ruckus, Cisco) costs more than consumer-grade hardware but performs significantly better and lasts longer. Cheaper equipment tends to cost more over a 5-year horizon when replacement and failure rates are factored in.
2. Installation cost ranges by site size
These ranges reflect typical UK installations with enterprise-grade equipment, a proper site survey and professional installation. Significantly cheaper quotes may indicate consumer-grade equipment, no site survey, or exclusions you should ask about.
| Site Type | Communal Only | Site-Wide Outdoor | Direct-to-Van |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 50 pitches | £1,500–£2,500 | £1,600–£3,500 | £4,000–£8,000 |
| 50–150 pitches | £2,000–£4,000 | £3,000–£6,000 | £7,000–£15,000 |
| 150–300 pitches | £3,500–£6,000 | £6,500–£10,000 | £12,000–£25,000 |
| 50+ pitches | Bespoke, contact us for a site-specific quote | ||
All figures are approximate and exclude internet connection costs. Complex terrain, significant existing infrastructure deficiencies or special requirements will push costs towards or beyond the top of these ranges.
3. Ongoing managed service costs
Most professional holiday park WiFi installations include annual support — remote monitoring, firmware updates, phone and email support. The first year is typically included with a paid installation. From year two, annual support fees range from:
| Site Size | Annual Support |
|---|---|
| Up to 50 pitches | £150–£249/year |
| 50–150 pitches | £249–£349/year |
| 150+ pitches | £349–£499/year |
Always check what's included. Some suppliers charge hourly rates for on-site visits on top of a support fee — this can add up significantly in the event of a hardware failure during peak season.
4. The free-install model explained
The free-install (or "guest-pays") model is the most significant innovation in holiday park WiFi commercial structures over the past decade. Here's exactly how it works:
- The WiFi supplier installs a complete managed system at their cost, no capital outlay for the park.
- Guests access the WiFi by paying a pass fee through the captive portal, daily (£2–£5), weekly (£8–£15) or season (£40–£80).
- Revenue collected from guest passes is shared between the supplier and the park, after the supplier has recovered installation and management costs.
- Once the supplier's costs are recovered (typically within 2–3 seasons), the park's revenue share increases and eventually the revenue becomes predominantly the park's.
The economics depend on occupancy and uptake. For this model to work, a park typically needs:
- 80+ pitches in active use during season
- At least 40–50% seasonal occupancy
- Guests who are likely to pay for WiFi (families, remote workers, holiday home owners)
Revenue reality
WiFi pass revenue in the free-install model contributes towards covering the supplier's infrastructure and management costs. The amount varies significantly by park type, season length, guest demographics and uptake rate. For most parks, the primary benefit of the free-install model is zero capital outlay, not WiFi as a standalone income stream. Speak to us for a realistic projection based on your site.
5. Self-install costs
For smaller parks or operators who are comfortable with basic DIY installation, our pre-configured self-install kits offer a much lower entry price:
| Kit Size | Coverage | Price (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Starter Kit | Communal area or up to 10 pitches | from £350 |
| Site Kit | Up to 25 pitches or 2 buildings | from £650 |
| Extended Site Kit | Up to 40 pitches or 4 buildings | from £1,200 |
These prices include pre-configured hardware, mounting equipment, and remote access to the management dashboard. UK phone and email support is included for 12 months. There is no monthly management fee, you manage the system yourself or call us for support at our standard hourly rate.
Self-install is available across the UK and Europe. See our self-install systems page for full details.
6. Internet connection costs
WiFi infrastructure costs are only half the equation. The internet connection feeding the system is equally important and often underestimated.
| Connection Type | Typical Speed | Monthly Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Business FTTP broadband | 100–1000Mbps | £40–£150/month |
| Dedicated leased line (FTTC) | 100–1000Mbps | £200–£600/month |
| Dedicated leased line (full fibre) | 1Gbps+ | £400–£1,200/month |
| 4G/5G bonded (rural) | 50–300Mbps | £150–£400/month |
For rural sites without good fibre availability, 4G/5G bonded connections are increasingly viable and can deliver adequate bandwidth for most mid-size parks. We work with connectivity partners who can assess options for your postcode.
